The etymology of the term "Courelli" is unclear, and still widely debated among historians and linguists. According to the most widely accepted explanation, the Atlian Courellia may derive from the Atlian noun acouré, meaning "fertility", and the suffix -ia, meaning "place/land."
The history of Courelli spans across Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the modern era. Since antiquity, ancient Atlians, Conselians, Lorenians, and others have inhabited the Atlian peninsula. Over the centuries, Atlians unified the peninsula, often at the expense of other societies on the peninsula. This unified Atlian Kingdom began to exert significant influence in western Erede and the surrounding seas for many centuries, making immeasurable contributions to humanity, notably in the fields of philosophy, science, and art.
After the decline and eventual fall of Atlia in 619 CE, the peninsula was reorganized into the Empire of Milonia. Despite seeing famous personalities from its territory rise to prominence, the Kingdom itself remained politically divided. The central Milonian territories, including Falceri and Leoncavallo, remained under the authority of the Crown, while the southwestern territories, such as modern-day Giordano province, remained largely decentralized. At the same time, the coastal cities rose to great prosperity through shipping, commerce, and banking, and Milonian explorers discovered new seafaring routes, helping to usher in the an age of global trade and lay the foundations for capitalism and colonialism.
In the mid-17th century CE, republican revolutionaries defeated the King's forces in the War of Democratic Liberation, and established a republic. The new Republic of Courelli, established in 1663, quickly modernized and built a colonial empire, controlling swaths of land on various continents. The Republic maintained this empire for several centuries, until its collapse in the early 20th century.
In the mid-20th century CE, Courelli solidified its role as a global power after a wartime victory with the Socialist-Liberal United Front against Fascism in the 1950s fascist civil war in the nearby nation of Hirematia. Shortly thereafter, Courelli served as a founding member of the Social Liberal Union, an international organization devoted to combatting fascism and maintaining global peace. To this day, Courelli remains a strong economic, cultural, military and political factor in the 21st century.
The Constitution of the Republic of Courelli is the supreme governing document of the Republic of Courelli. Initially implemented in 1689, its current form was adopted in 2017, and is the fourth constitution that the Republic has had.
The executive branch is established in Article TBA of the Courellian Constitution, which vests executive power in a Governor of the Republic of Courelli. The Governor is both the head of state (performing ceremonial functions) and the head of government (the chief executive). Many Gubernatorial actions are undertaken via executive orders, proclamations, and memoranda. The Governor is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. The Governor is empowered to "receive Ambassadors and other public Ministers," and, as the Republic's chief diplomat, has broad authority to conduct foreign relations
The economy of Courelli is a highly developed mixed economy. The largest Courellian trading partners are Hirematia, Erynia and Draconia, Ramelia, and Goncar. It has free trade agreements with several nations, including Hirematia and Erynia and Draconia. The nation's economy is fueled by abundant natural resources, a well-developed infrastructure, and high productivity.
Courelli is located in western Erede, and is comprised of the Atlian peninsula, the tropical island of Avanua, and several other smaller islands. Courelli is part of the Northern Hemisphere. Its total area is TBA, of which TBA is land and TBA is water. It lies between latitudes TBA° and TBA° N, and longitudes TBA° and TBA° E. Nearby countries include Sgáwpîtyàw, Hirematia, and Lawattsia. The total border length is TBA. Including islands, Courelli has a coastline of TBA on the Lorenian Sea, the Sea of Serenity, and the Rhumasae Ocean.
Courelli has a variety of climate systems. The northern areas of Courelli (such as Falceri and Bassano) have a Humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa), while the southern areas (such as Leoncavallo, Aleotti, and Picci) generally fit the Mediterranean climate (Köppen climate classification Csa). The western mountainous areas (such as Monte Gabrieli) generally fit the Oceanic climate and Subarctic climate.
Between the east and west there can be a considerable difference in temperature, above all during the winter: in some winter days it can be 28°F and snowing in Monte Gabrieli, while it is 51°F in Leoncavallo and 68°F in Falceri. Summer is usually more stable, although the northeastern regions often have thunderstorms in the afternoon and night hours. So, while in the south the summer is typically dry and sunny, in the north it tends to be more humid and cloudy. Spring and autumn weather can vary significantly, with sunny and warm weeks suddenly broken off by cold spells or by rain.
Religion in Courelli is diverse, with Dalinism (specifically Holy Dalinism) being the majority religion; however, various religious faiths have flourished within Courelli, as freedom of religion is guaranteed by the Constitution. Since the 1990s, the religious share of Dalinists has decreased, while Onaronism, Ārameyāra, Astralism, Appointmentism, and other religions have spread, mainly from immigration.
The Courellian Defense Forces are the military forces of the Republic of Courelli, and consist of three service branches: the Courellian Army, the Courellian Navy and the Courellian Air Force. The Governor heads the armed forces as established by the Courellian Constitution, and creates military policy in conjunction with the Directorate of Security. However, only the National Assembly has the authority to declare a state of war and vest the necessary military authority in the Government. The Provinces of Courelli are not allowed to maintain armed forces of their own, as the Constitution states that matters of defense fall into the sole responsibility of the national government.
From their inception as volunteer republican revolutionary militias during the War of Democratic Liberation (1660 – 1663), the Courellian Defense Forces have played a decisive role in Courellian history. They helped forge an early sense of national unity and identity through victories against the Royal Army of Courelli in the War of Democratic Liberation, and played a critical role in the mid-18th century Pirate Wars, keeping the Republic secure from the dangers of piracy. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Courellian Defense Forces fought in colonial engagements in Harndon and Noirmarche, were deployed to Hirematia to put down a fascist coup, and fought to defend the Republic in the civil conflict of the early 1980s. Since the turn of the millennium, the Army has seen extensive peacekeeping service in unstable countries, such as Sgáwpîtyàw.
The Republic of Courelli had an official resident population of 213,498,726 as of January 1, 2020. The Courellian population almost quadrupled during the 20th century – at a growth rate of about TBA a year – from about TBA in 1900 to TBA in 2000. Foreign-born immigration has caused the Courellian population to continue its rapid increase, with the foreign-born population doubling from almost TBA in 1990 to over TBA in 2020, representing one-third of the population increase.
The culture of the Republic of Courelli is primarily of western Eredean origin, but is influenced by broad array of foreign cultures over its long history. The Eredean roots of Courelli originate in the Paleolithic Age with the Tritian people – the first known inhabitants of the Atlian peninsula. The peninsula was home to many well-known and influential civilizations, including the Conselians, Lorenians, and Norians, which flourished before the emergence of the first major regional power, the Kingdom of Atlia, which conquered and incorporated them. For more than 2,000 years, the Atlian peninsula experienced large migrations, invasions, and other sociopolitical changes which helped shape the developing culture into a powerhouse of growth and innovation in western Erede and across the globe.
The country boasts several world-famous cities. Leoncavallo, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Atlia and current capital of the Republic of Courelli, is an artistic, cultural and cinematographic center of great renown. Aleotti is the seat of the Holy Dalinist Church, which has wielded immense worldwide influence for centuries and facilitated the spread of Dalinism and its development into a major world religion. Other important cities include Falceri, the former capital of the great merchant civilization Conselia, and the industrial and financial capital of Courelli to this day.
The famous elements of Courellian culture are its art, music, style, and iconic food. Courellian culture includes both conservative and liberal elements, scientific and religious competitiveness, political structures, risk taking and free expression, materialist and moral elements. Despite certain consistent ideological principles, Courellian culture has a variety of expressions due to its geographical scale and demographic diversity.
Throughout the country's history, certain subcultures have dominated certain neighborhoods, only partially melded with the broader culture. Due to the extent of Courellian culture, there are many integrated but unique social subcultures within Courelli, some not tied to any particular geography. The cultural affiliations an individual in Courelli may have commonly depend on social class, political orientation and a multitude of demographic characteristics such as religious background, occupation, and ethnic group membership.
