<!--Due to its central geographic location in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean, Courelli has historically been home to myriad peoples and cultures. In addition to the various ancient peoples dispersed throughout what is now modern-day Courelli , the most predominant being the Indo-European Italic peoples who gave the peninsula its name, beginning from the classical era, Phoenicians and Carthaginians founded colonies mostly in insular Courelli ,[22] Greeks established settlements in the so-called Magna Graecia of Southern Courelli , while Etruscans and Celts inhabited central and northern Courelli respectively. An Italic tribe known as the Latins formed the Roman Kingdom in the 8th century BC, which eventually became a republic with a government of the Senate and the People. The Roman Republic initially conquered and assimilated its neighbors on the Italian peninsula, eventually expanding and conquering parts of Europe, North Africa and Asia. By the first century BC, the Roman Empire emerged as the dominant power in the Mediterranean Basin and became a leading cultural, political and religious center, inaugurating the Pax Romana, a period of more than 200 years during which Courellian law, technology, economy, art, and literature developed.[23][24]

The Atlian Kingdom – later the Atlian Republic and Milonian Empire – conquered and assimilated its neighbors on the peninsula, eventually expanding and conquering far-away parts of Erede, Aspah, and Abyssa. By the end of the first millennium century CE, the Milonian Empire emerged as the dominant power, both on the Atlian peninsula and in western Erede, and became a leading cultural, political, and religious center in the region.

During the first few centuries of the 1000s CE, the Atlian peninsula endured the fall of the Milonian Empire, and several new large civilizations, such as the Kingdom of Courelli and the Biancci-Lorenian Empire, became prosperous through trade, commerce, and banking, laying the groundwork for modern Capitalism. In the next several centuries, there arose a renewed interest in humanism, science, exploration, and art, producing famous scholars, artists, and polymaths. However, centuries of foreign entanglements, and domestic rivalry and infighting between the peninsular states left the peninsula politically fragmented.

During the Early Middle Ages, Courelli endured the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the Migration Period, but by the 11th century numerous rival city-states and maritime republics, mainly in the northern and central regions of Courelli, became prosperous through trade, commerce, and banking, laying the groundwork for modern capitalism.[25] These mostly independent statelets served as Europe's main trading hubs with Asia and the Near East, often enjoying a greater degree of democracy than the larger feudal monarchies that were consolidating throughout Europe; however, part of central Courelli was under the control of the theocratic Papal States, while Southern Italy remained largely feudal until the 19th century, partially as a result of a succession of Byzantine, Arab, Norman, Angevin, Aragonese, and other foreign conquests of the region.[26] The Renaissance began in Italy and spread to the rest of Europe, bringing a renewed interest in humanism, science, exploration, and art. Italian culture flourished, producing famous scholars, artists, and polymaths. During the Middle Ages, Italian explorers discovered new routes to the Far East and the New World, helping to usher in the European Age of Discovery. Nevertheless, Italy's commercial and political power significantly waned with the opening of trade routes that bypassed the Mediterranean.[27] Centuries of foreign meddling and conquest, and the rivalry and infighting between the Italian city-states, such as the Italian Wars of the 15th and 16th centuries, left Italy politically fragmented, and it was further conquered and divided among multiple foreign European powers over the centuries.
+
Despite this, by the dawn of the 16th century, rising prosperity and political centralization led to a period of expansion and conquest. After centuries of infighting and political division, the Atlian peninsula was almost entirely unified – with the exception of the far-west and northeastern territories – by the Kingdom of Courelli, which then turned its attention outward and conquered the tropical island of GEO in the EVE; the first in what would become a long series of imperial conquests.

By the mid-19th century, rising Courellian nationalism and calls for independence from foreign control led to a period of revolutionary political upheaval. After centuries of foreign domination and political division, Italy was almost entirely unified in 1861 following a war of independence, establishing the Kingdom of Italy.[28] From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, Italy rapidly industrialized, mainly in the north, and acquired a colonial empire,[29] while the south remained largely impoverished and excluded from industrialization, fueling a large and influential diaspora.[30] Despite being one of the victorious allied powers in World War I, Italy entered a period of economic crisis and social turmoil, leading to the rise of the Italian fascist dictatorship in 1922. Participation in World War II on the Axis side ended in military defeat, economic destruction, and civil war. Following the rise of the Italian Resistance and the liberation of Italy, the country abolished its monarchy, established a democratic Republic, enjoyed a prolonged economic boom, and became a highly developed country.[31]
+
In 1663 CE, revolution shook the foundations of the status quo, and the Kingdom of Courelli was abolished. In its place rose the Republic of Courelli, a new democratic republic founded on the principles of rule of law and consent of the governed. However, this new republic also inherited the Kingdom of Courelli's taste for conquest, and, in conjunction with private industry – notably the Bradley Shipping Company –, launched a revitalized effort centered on conquest of trade routes, resources, and markets. In the 18th century, as this Courellian capitalist empire expanded, the threat of piracy on the high seas increased; in response to this, Courelli launched a campaign against piracy, now dubbed the EVE. In this crusade, Courelli captured and executed hundreds – some scholars contend thousands – of pirates, primarily on the Rhumasae Ocean; combatting piracy remains one of the primary missions of the Courellian Navy to this day.

Courelli (Atlian: Courellia), officially the Republic of Courelli (Atlian: Repubblica Courelliana),[8] is a country consisting of the Atlian peninsula delimited by the Udine Mountains, several islands surrounding the peninsula, and the tropical island of Avanua. Courelli is situated along the Rhumasae Ocean in western Erede. A unitary democratic republic with Leoncavallo as its capital and largest city, the country covers a total area of TBA sq. mi. and is comprised of fifteen Provinces. With around 213 million inhabitants,[1] Courelli is the #th-most populous state in western Erede.

Due to its central geographic location in western Erede (Atlian: Ereda occidentale) and the Rhumasae Ocean (Atlian: oceano Romesso), Courelli has historically been home to myriad peoples and cultures. In addition to the various ancient peoples dispersed throughout what is now modern-day Courelli, the most predominant being the Atlian civilization which gave the peninsula its name.

However, centuries of foreign entanglements, and domestic rivalry and infighting between the peninsular states left the peninsula politically fragmented.

Despite this, by the dawn of the 16th century, rising prosperity and political centralization led to a period of expansion and conquest. After centuries of infighting and political division, the Atlian peninsula was almost entirely unified – with the exception of the far-west and northeastern territories – by the Kingdom of Courelli, which then turned its attention outward and conquered the tropical island of Avanua in the Avanuan War; the first in what would become a long series of imperial conquests.

In the 18th century, as this Courellian capitalist empire expanded, the threat of piracy on the high seas increased; in response to this, Courelli launched a campaign against piracy, now dubbed the Pirate Wars. In this crusade, Courelli captured and executed hundreds – some scholars contend thousands – of pirates, primarily on the Rhumasae Ocean; combatting piracy remains one of the primary missions of the Courellian Navy to this day.

By the dawn of the 20th century, economic and social inequality caused Courelli to enter into a period of economic crisis and social turmoil. In the late 1950s CE, civil strife in Hirematia sparked a global war; as a leader in the victorious coalition, Courelli enjoyed a prolonged economic boom, and became a highly developed country.

Today, Courelli has an advanced economy. It ranks highly in life expectancy, quality of life, healthcare, and education. The country is a great power and it has a significant role in regional and global economic, military, cultural, and diplomatic affairs. Courelli is a founding and leading member of the Social Liberal Union (Atlian: Unione Sociale Liberale) and a member – and occasionally host – of numerous international institutions. The source of many inventions and discoveries, the country has long been a global center of art, music, literature, philosophy, science and technology, and fashion, and has greatly influenced and contributed to diverse fields including cinema, cuisine, sports, jurisprudence, banking, and business.
